Embarcadero Names mimix 3D Profile Scanner Cool App for March

Austin, Texas – April 10, 2017 - Embarcadero Technologies (a division of IDERA), a leading provider of software solutions for application development, today announced that the March 2017 winner of its Cool App contest is mimix 3D Profile Scanner, a tool that enables users to make 3D impressions using their webcam and PC monitor.

“The impressions created through mimix 3D Profile Scanner are truly fascinating and haunting pieces of art”

mimix 3D Profile Scanner Personal, which is available for free download, uses a set of four black and white patterns, which are projected by a computer screen while the camera captures the images of the user’s face or other object in front of the screen. The images are then processed to reveal a detailed 3D impression. An Advanced version of mimix 3D Profile Scanner is also available for free upon request.

“The impressions created through mimix 3D Profile Scanner are truly fascinating and haunting pieces of art,” said Jim McKeeth, chief developer advocate and engineer at Embarcadero. “I love how it uses the existing monitor and webcam we all have in a new and creative way. Giving developers this kind of flexibility is one of the amazing features of Delphi.”

Under proper lighting conditions, mimix 3D Profile Scanner can capture scenes and objects with incredible detail recovery. Users can create cool effects by relighting the scene and create 3D prints of their impressions. The official release version is still in the works so the developers will continue to roll out frequent updates with added functionality in the coming months.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Embarcadero team for our work. Delphi has been and still is our primary development tool,” said mimix 3D Profile Scanner developer B.J. Rao. “mimix employs a highly improved imaging technique algorithm that we have been developing for high-end 3D scanning applications. Developing such algorithms can be complex with a significant amount of testing and experimentation involved. Delphi allowed us to do this as well as move into new directions. Delphi’s rich VCL allowed us to rapidly build an app with an intuitive an appealing GUI. The icing on the cake!”

Embarcadero’s Cool App contest is open to any business or consumer application built with RAD Studio, Delphi or C++Builder. Qualifying apps can use VCL, FireMonkey, DataSnap, EMS, FireDAC, InterBase and any other components, libraries, services, sites, infrastructures, APIs or devices. Embarcadero awards Cool App contest winners a $500 Amazon gift card and winning submissions are also highlighted on the company’s YouTube channel.
